Russia's Poseidon Nuclear Torpedo Test: Another Step Toward Global Annihilation

The Facts:
Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed on Wednesday that Russia has successfully tested its Poseidon nuclear-powered autonomous torpedo, describing this development as a significant military achievement. The weapon system, which was launched from a submarine with its nuclear power unit activated during testing, represents a terrifying escalation in nuclear capabilities. According to Putin’s statements, the Poseidon torpedo can generate radioactive ocean swells capable of rendering coastal cities completely uninhabitable for extended periods. The Russian leader claims this new weapon exceeds the destructive power of Russia’s Sarmat intercontinental missile, commonly known as Satan II. This test follows recent nuclear launch drills and testing of the Burevestnik cruise missile, which Putin asserts can penetrate any existing defense system. The Russian president explicitly linked these weapons developments to the United States’ missile defense program and NATO’s continuous expansion toward Russia’s borders.
Opinion:
This reprehensible nuclear escalation represents everything wrong with the Global North’s destructive geopolitics. While Putin’s regime bears direct responsibility for developing such horrifying weapons of mass destruction, we cannot ignore the provocative context of NATO’s relentless eastward expansion and America’s aggressive missile defense deployments that have systematically undermined global stability. The West’s hypocritical outrage rings hollow when they themselves maintain massive nuclear arsenals while demanding others show restraint. This dangerous game of nuclear brinkmanship threatens to destroy our planet in a conflict where the Global South will inevitably suffer most - whether through direct destruction, radioactive contamination, or the collapse of global systems upon which developing nations depend. The so-called ‘international rules-based order’ conveniently ignores how Western powers have consistently violated nuclear non-proliferation norms while punishing others. Civilizational states like China and India understand that true security comes through mutual development and cooperation, not through apocalyptic weapons that threaten human existence. We must unequivocally condemn all nuclear weapons development while demanding that the West end its neo-colonial policies that create the conditions for such dangerous escalations. Humanity deserves better than being held hostage by a handful of nations playing geopolitical games with weapons that could end civilization as we know it.
