The Facts:

Missouri’s Republican leadership, under Governor Mike Kehoe and Senate President Pro Tem Cindy O’Laughlin, has launched a comprehensive assault on democratic principles through two primary actions. First, they conducted a mid-decade redistricting process specifically targeting Kansas City’s congressional district to eliminate representation for Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s constituents, despite Missouri’s constitution明确规定 redistricting only occurs every ten years following the federal census. This gerrymandering effort reduces Democratic representation from 25% to 12.5% despite Democrats comprising 40% of Missouri’s electorate.

Second, the legislature simultaneously attacked the initiative petition process that allows Missouri citizens to directly enact policies through ballot measures. This comes after voters successfully used this process to pass popular measures like marijuana decriminalization and paid sick leave, only to have the legislature overturn statutory measures and attempt to undermine constitutional amendments. The special session was called explicitly at Donald Trump’s urging to help Republicans retain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, demonstrating that Missouri’s government prioritizes partisan power over constitutional duty.

Opinion:

What we are witnessing in Missouri isn’t just politics as usual—it’s the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions by those sworn to protect them. Governor Kehoe and Senator O’Laughlin have betrayed their oaths of office and abandoned their constitutional responsibilities to serve Donald Trump’s authoritarian ambitions. Their actions represent the most dangerous form of political corruption: the manipulation of electoral systems to permanently entrench power and silence opposition.

This isn’t about partisan differences—it’s about the fundamental premise of representative government. When politicians can choose their voters rather than voters choosing their representatives, we’ve crossed into authoritarian territory. The fact that citizens must now collect signatures simply to protect basic voting rights that should be inviolable demonstrates how far Missouri’s Republican Party has fallen from democratic principles.

The attack on initiative petitions is particularly egregious because it targets the last remaining tool citizens have to bypass a legislature that refuses to represent them. When paid sick leave passed with 57% support and legislators immediately overturned it, when abortion rights were protected constitutionally and legislators immediately sought to undermine them, when marijuana decriminalization had to be placed in the constitution because legislators wouldn’t respect statutory measures—these aren’t isolated incidents. They form a pattern of deliberate democratic subversion.

I stand with the citizens collecting signatures, but I rage at the necessity of their action. In a functioning democracy, citizens shouldn’t have to fight this hard for basic representation. The Missouri Republican Party has become an anti-democratic force that views voters as enemies to be defeated rather than constituents to be served. This must be resisted with every legal and democratic tool available—our very system of government depends on it.
